How to Get a Springfield Birth Certificate

You can get a certified birth certificate in person at the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. Bring a valid photo ID and $15 per copy. Additional copies ordered at the same time are $11 each. Processing is typically same-day for walk-in requests.

To request by mail, download the application form from the Missouri DHSS vital records page. Fill it out completely, get your signature notarized, and send with payment by check or money order. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Mail requests take longer than walk-in visits, often one to two weeks.

Online orders go through VitalChek, which is the state's authorized online vendor. Expect an extra service fee on top of the standard $15. VitalChek routes requests to the state Bureau of Vital Records.

The state office itself can also process mail requests. Contact the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records at 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, phone (573) 751-6387. The state holds records from January 1910 forward and can issue certified copies for any Missouri birth.

Note: For newborns, wait two to three weeks after birth before applying. Records need time to get entered into the system before the office can print a copy.

Who Can Get Springfield Birth Records

Under RSMo 193.245, certified birth certificates in Missouri are restricted to specific people. Those who qualify include:

  • The person named on the record, if age 18 or older
  • A parent listed on the certificate
  • A legal guardian with court-issued documentation
  • A spouse, adult child, or sibling with proof of relationship
  • An attorney or legal representative of an eligible person
  • A government agency with a legitimate purpose

Walk-in requests require a valid photo ID. Mail requests need a notarized signature. If someone else is picking up the record for you, they need your written permission and their own ID.

Springfield Birth Records Fees and Payment

Each certified copy of a birth certificate costs $15. The fee is set by RSMo 193.265 and is nonrefundable even if the record is not found. Additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time cost $11 each.

Accepted payment methods vary by how you request. For walk-in service at the health department, bring cash or a check. For mail requests, use a check or money order. Online orders through VitalChek accept credit cards but add a service fee.

Historical Springfield Birth Records

Missouri's state registration of births started in January 1910. Before that, local records in Springfield and Greene County were kept at the county level with varying completeness. The local health department holds records from 1920 onward. For births between 1910 and 1919, the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City holds those files.

For births before 1910, you need genealogical sources. The Missouri State Archives has some early vital records, and the Missouri Digital Heritage database includes indexed birth records from the pre-state era. FamilySearch has resources for Boone County and surrounding southwest Missouri counties that can help fill gaps in official records.

Greene County maintained early registration records at the county courthouse. The Greene County Archives, housed at the Recorder's office at 940 N Boonville Ave, Springfield, MO 65802, may hold older documents not available from the health department.

Adoptee Access to Springfield Birth Records

Missouri law gives adult adoptees the right to their original birth certificate. Under RSMo 193.128, an adoptee who is 18 or older can get an uncertified copy of the original record, which shows birth parent information before the adoption was legally completed.

These requests go to the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City, not to the local health department in Springfield. You will need proof of your identity and your adoptive name. Processing works the same as any other vital records request at the state level.

State Resources for Springfield Births

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services maintains statewide records from 1910 onward. Their website explains the full process for getting a vital record, including the forms and requirements for Springfield residents. The CDC's Where to Write guide for Missouri is a useful reference for older records and for people researching family history.
