How to Request Greene County Birth Records

Three methods are available for getting a certified Greene County birth certificate. You can visit the Springfield-Greene County Health Department in person, mail a request to the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City, or order online through VitalChek. All three produce a certified copy with a raised seal that is valid for legal use.

In-person requests at the health department at 227 E. Chestnut Expressway are the fastest option. Bring a valid photo ID and $15. Fill out the form and you'll typically leave with the certificate the same day. Mail requests to the state take two to four weeks. Download the form from the Missouri DHSS vital records page, complete it, and include a photocopy of your ID and a check or money order for $15 made out to Missouri State Treasurer. Mail to 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

Online orders through VitalChek accept credit card payment and can be placed any time. VitalChek adds a service fee to the $15 state fee. The certificate is mailed after processing. This is a good option for people who prefer to handle everything online or are away from Springfield.

Note: Fees are not refunded after a search is conducted, even when no record is found. If you are not sure the record is in the system, call (417) 864-1810 before paying to check.

Who Can Request Greene County Birth Records

Missouri birth records are restricted documents. Access is governed by RSMo 193.245. Only people with a direct legal interest in the record can receive a certified copy. These records are not open to the public.

Eligible requestors include:

  • The person named on the certificate (age 18 or older)
  • A parent listed on the birth record
  • A legal guardian with court documentation
  • A spouse or adult child of the named person
  • An attorney representing a qualifying party
  • A government agency with an official purpose

Researchers who do not meet these criteria can still access older historical records through the Missouri State Archives and FamilySearch. These records are not certified copies and cannot be used for legal identification.

Fees for Greene County Birth Certificates

A certified birth certificate costs $15 per copy. Additional copies ordered in the same request cost $11 each. These fees apply at both the Springfield-Greene County Health Department and the state Bureau of Vital Records. They are set under RSMo 193.265. Fees are not waived and are not refunded once a search has been started.

The health department accepts cash and personal checks. The state office requires a check or money order payable to Missouri State Treasurer. VitalChek accepts major credit cards but adds a processing fee. If you use VitalChek, plan for that extra charge on top of the $15 state fee.

Historical Birth Records in Greene County

Greene County has a long history. Births before 1910 were not part of the state registration system. Some early county records do exist in other forms. The County Clerk holds historical birth and death records from the 1880s and 1890s. These are historical documents, not certified vital records, but they can support genealogical research.

The Missouri State Archives is the best resource for pre-state vital records. The Archives holds microfilm and digital county records from across Missouri and is free to search online. The Missouri Digital Heritage site provides access to additional historical document collections. FamilySearch has indexed a large volume of Missouri county records and is a free, reliable starting point for historical birth searches.

For births before county records begin, look to church baptismal records, federal census records, and family documents. The 1880 census recorded birth years and places, which can help confirm approximate dates. The CDC vital statistics guide for Missouri summarizes what records exist and where to contact for each type.

Adoptee Access to Greene County Birth Records

Missouri adoptees who are 18 or older have the right to request their original birth certificate under RSMo 193.128. The original record, which may list birth parents by name, is available from the Bureau of Vital Records without a court order. The copy provided is uncertified and cannot be used as legal ID, but it is valuable for personal and medical history purposes.

To request an original birth certificate as an adoptee, contact the Bureau of Vital Records at (573) 751-6387. Provide your name, date of birth, and a valid photo ID. Birth parents who are open to contact can register with the Missouri Adoption Registry. The state office can explain how the registry works and how to sign up.

Delayed and Corrected Greene County Birth Certificates

If a Greene County birth was never registered, a delayed birth certificate can be created through the Bureau of Vital Records under RSMo 193.105. This requires documentary evidence of the birth. Acceptable evidence includes census records, school records, church records, sworn affidavits, and medical documents. The state reviews all submitted evidence and creates a birth record when the documentation is sufficient to verify the birth.

To correct an error on an existing Greene County birth certificate, contact the Bureau of Vital Records at (573) 751-6387. Name corrections, date changes, and parental information updates all require documentation. The office will tell you exactly what documents are needed based on the type of correction.
