Independence Birth Records
Independence birth records are maintained by Jackson County Public Health, the local vital records office for all of Jackson County. The office offers same-day certified copies of Missouri birth certificates at its Lee's Summit location. Independence also has a city health department, but birth certificates are handled exclusively by the county, not the city office.

How to Get an Independence Birth Certificate
Walk-in service is the quickest option. Go to the Jackson County Public Health office in Lee's Summit. Bring a valid photo ID and $15 per copy. Same-day printing is available for most requests. Additional copies of the same record, ordered at the same time, cost $11 each.
Mail requests are also accepted. Download the application from the Missouri DHSS vital records page. Fill it out completely, get it notarized, and mail it with payment (check or money order) and a copy of your photo ID. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Allow one to two weeks for processing.
Online orders go through VitalChek, the state's authorized vendor. A service fee applies on top of the $15 certificate cost. VitalChek processes orders through the state Bureau of Vital Records.
You can also contact the state directly at the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records, 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, phone (573) 751-6387. The state holds records from January 1910 forward and can issue a certified copy for any Missouri birth.
Note: For newborns, allow two to three weeks before applying. The birth needs to process into the system first.
Who Can Get Independence Birth Records
Missouri limits certified birth certificates to specific people under RSMo 193.245. Those who qualify include:
- The person named on the certificate, if 18 or older
- A parent listed on the record
- A legal guardian with court documentation
- A spouse, adult child, or sibling with proof of relationship
- An attorney representing any of the above
- A government agency with a documented need
Walk-in requests require a photo ID. Mail requests must include a notarized signature. If someone else picks up a certificate on your behalf, they need written authorization from you and their own photo ID.

For walk-in service, Jackson County Public Health accepts debit cards, credit cards, and cash. American Express and personal checks are not accepted. Mail-in requests require a check or money order payable to Jackson County Public Health or the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records, depending on which office you contact.
Independence Historical Birth Records
Missouri has registered births at the state level since January 1910. The local Jackson County office holds records from 1920 forward. For births between 1910 and 1919, the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City holds those files.
Before 1910, records were kept at the local level with varying completeness. The Missouri State Archives has some historical vital records, and the Missouri Digital Heritage database has indexed pre-state birth records from Jackson County and surrounding areas. The Kansas City Historical Society also has research collections that may include early Independence-area births.
Jackson County maintained local birth registers going back to at least the 1870s. These early local records are separate from the state system and require genealogical research to locate.
Adoptee Birth Records in Independence
Missouri gives adult adoptees the right to access their original birth certificate. Under RSMo 193.128, adoptees who are 18 or older can request an uncertified copy of their original record. This shows the birth parents' names as they appeared before the adoption was finalized.
Submit these requests to the state Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City, not to Jackson County Public Health. Bring or send proof of your identity and adoptive name. The state processes adoptee requests the same way as any other vital records request.
State Resources for Independence Births
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services maintains records statewide from 1910 onward. Their how to obtain a vital record page walks through the process for Independence residents step by step.
