How to Request Taney County Birth Records

Three options exist for getting a certified Taney County birth certificate: walk in, mail a request, or order online through VitalChek.

Walk-in requests can be made at either the Forsyth or Branson office during regular business hours. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Tell staff the name on the certificate, date of birth, and place of birth. Pay the $15 fee. You will receive your certified copy the same day.

Mail requests require a completed and notarized application. Download the form from the Missouri DHSS website, fill it out, and have it notarized before mailing. Attach a copy of your photo ID and a check or money order for $15. Mail to either office location. Allow one to two weeks for processing and return delivery.

Online orders use VitalChek, the state-approved ordering platform. VitalChek accepts credit cards and routes requests to the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. A service fee is added to the $15 state fee. Processing time is similar to mail. This option covers records from 1910 forward only.

Who Can Obtain Taney County Birth Records

Missouri law under RSMo 193.245 restricts who can receive a certified birth certificate. Eligible people are: the person named on the record (if age 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian listed on the certificate, a spouse, an adult child or adult sibling of the registrant, or a legal representative with documented written authority. All requesters must show a government-issued photo ID.

Researchers and genealogists without a qualifying family connection can still access records that are at least 100 years old. Missouri generally treats birth records as open to the public after 100 years. Early Taney County records held by the County Clerk or the Missouri State Archives are typically accessible with few restrictions. For any record less than 100 years old, a qualifying relationship must be established before a certified copy will be issued.

Note: Only certified copies with a raised official seal are accepted for legal purposes such as passport applications, Social Security filings, school enrollment, and court proceedings.

Taney County Birth Certificate Fees

The fee is $15 per certified copy. Additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time cost $11 each at the state Bureau. These fees apply at both the county office and the state Bureau of Vital Records.

Payment methods at the county offices may include cash, check, and money order. Online orders through VitalChek require a credit card and add a service fee. All fees are non-refundable even if no record is found. Make sure the name and date are correct before submitting any paid request.

Fee amounts are set by state law under RSMo 193.265. County offices cannot charge above or below the state-approved rate for certified vital record copies.
