The Stone County Health Department birth and death records page describes how to request a certified copy, what the fees are, and what request methods are available.
The office confirms that certified copies of birth certificates are available for any birth in Missouri from 1920 forward, with same-day service for in-person requests.
A second office location also serves the county. The Stone County Health Center at 109 E. 4th Street in Galena serves residents in the county seat area. Call ahead to confirm hours and availability at either location before making the trip. Both offices handle walk-in requests for birth certificates during regular business hours.
How to Request Stone County Birth Records
Three methods are available for getting a certified Stone County birth certificate.
Walk-in requests are the fastest. Visit either office location during business hours. Bring a government-issued photo ID. Give staff the full name on the certificate, date of birth, and place of birth. Pay the $15 fee and receive your copy the same day. This is the quickest path for most people.
Mail requests take one to two weeks. Download the Missouri vital records application from the DHSS website, fill it out completely, and have it notarized by a notary public. Attach a copy of your photo ID and a check or money order for $15 payable to the Stone County Health Department. Mail everything to 701 Old Wilderness Rd., Reeds Spring, MO 65737.
Online orders go through VitalChek. This is the state-approved electronic ordering service. VitalChek adds a service fee on top of the $15 state fee and routes your request to the Bureau of Vital Records. Processing takes similar time to a mail request. VitalChek covers records from 1910 forward only. Note: only VitalChek is state-approved for online orders; other third-party sites are not official.
Who Can Obtain Stone County Birth Records
Missouri law under RSMo 193.245 restricts who may receive a certified birth certificate. Eligible people include: the person named on the certificate (if 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian listed on the record, a spouse, an adult child or adult sibling of the registrant, or a legal representative with written authority. All requests require a government-issued photo ID.
Researchers and genealogists who lack a qualifying family connection can still access records that are at least 100 years old. Missouri opens birth records to public access after 100 years. Early Stone County records at the County Clerk or State Archives are generally accessible with few restrictions. For records less than 100 years old, a qualifying relationship must be established before a certified copy is released.
Note: Genealogy databases may have index entries for Stone County births without requiring a family relationship, but only a certified copy from the health department or state bureau is valid for legal use.
Stone County Birth Certificate Fees
A certified birth certificate costs $15. Each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time costs $15 as well (not the usual $11 discount). These fees apply at the county office. The state Bureau charges $15 for the first copy and $11 for each additional copy ordered at the same time.
Payment methods vary by request type. Online orders through VitalChek require a credit card and add a service fee. In-person and mail requests at the county office can be paid by cash or check. All fees are non-refundable even if no record is found. Confirm the correct name and birth date before submitting any paid request.
The fee schedule is set by state law under RSMo 193.265. No county may set a different fee for certified vital record copies.

Statewide birth registration in Missouri became consistent starting in January 1910. Records from before that date are found in a few different places.
The Stone County Clerk may hold some early birth registration entries from the 1880s and 1890s. These are not modern certified certificates but can yield useful genealogical information. Contact the County Clerk at the courthouse in Galena to find out what records from that period survived and are accessible.
The Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City maintains older county records and can assist with pre-1910 research. The Missouri Digital Heritage site provides online access to some early digitized vital records. For context on what Missouri records exist by time period, see the CDC's Missouri vital records reference page.
Adoptee Access to Stone County Birth Records
Under RSMo 193.128, Missouri adult adoptees have the right to request their original birth certificate. Any person age 18 or older adopted in Missouri may apply to the Bureau of Vital Records for the original pre-adoption certificate. Birth parent consent is not required.
Send a written request to the Bureau of Vital Records, 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Include your full legal name, date of birth, and a copy of your photo ID. The fee is $15. The original certificate shows the name recorded at birth and the biological parents' names as listed at registration. Call the Bureau at (573) 751-6387 if you are unsure whether your Stone County birth record is held at the county or state level.
