Washington County is one of Missouri's older counties, organized in 1813. The county seat of Potosi has been the administrative center for records throughout the county's long history. The health department at 520 Purcell Drive handles in-person requests for certified copies. Certificates for Missouri births only are printed on site. Certificates from other states are not available at this office and must be requested from the appropriate state.
Picture identification is required for all requests, whether in person or by mail. Photo ID should be a current government-issued document such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Mail requests must be notarized before the office will process them.
How to Get Washington County Birth Records
Three options exist: walk in, mail a notarized request, or order online through VitalChek.
Walk-in requests are handled at 520 Purcell Drive in Potosi during regular business hours. Bring a current government-issued photo ID. Tell staff the name on the certificate, the date of birth, and the place of birth. Pay the $15 fee. You will receive your certified copy with a raised seal the same day.
Mail requests require a completed and notarized application. Download the Missouri vital records application from the DHSS website. Fill it out and get it notarized before sending. Attach a copy of your photo ID and a check or money order for $15. Mail the full packet to 520 Purcell Drive, Potosi, MO 63664. Allow one to two weeks for processing and return mail.
Online orders go through VitalChek. VitalChek is the only state-approved electronic ordering service for Missouri vital records. It accepts credit cards and routes requests to the Bureau of Vital Records. A service fee is added to the $15 state fee. Processing time is similar to mail requests. VitalChek covers records from 1910 forward only.
Who Can Request Washington County Birth Records
Missouri law under RSMo 193.245 restricts who may receive a certified birth certificate. Eligible people are: the person named on the record (if age 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian listed on the certificate, a spouse, an adult child or adult sibling, or a legal representative with written authority. Government-issued photo ID is required for all requests.
Researchers and genealogists without a qualifying family connection can still access records that are 100 years old or more. Missouri opens birth records to public access after 100 years. Early Washington County records at the County Clerk or the Missouri State Archives are typically accessible with minimal restrictions. For records under 100 years old, a qualifying relationship must be established before a certified copy is issued.
Note: Only certified copies with a raised official seal from the health department or state Bureau are valid for legal use such as passport applications, court filings, and school enrollment.
