The state portal below is used for requesting Dent County birth records through the Missouri DHSS online system when visiting Salem in person is not practical.
The state's online system at health.mo.gov is a good alternative for those who cannot travel to Salem.
How to Request a Dent County Birth Certificate
You have three options for requesting a Dent County birth certificate. Visit the health center in person in Salem, mail a request to the state Bureau of Vital Records, or use the VitalChek online service. All three methods produce a certified copy with an official seal that is valid for legal use.
In-person service at the county is fastest. Bring your ID and $15. Fill out the form and you'll usually get the certificate the same day. For mail requests to the state, get the form from the Missouri DHSS vital records page. Complete it, attach a copy of your photo ID, and send a check for $15 made out to Missouri State Treasurer. Mail to 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Allow two to four weeks.
Online orders through VitalChek allow you to pay by credit card and submit at any time. VitalChek charges a service fee. The state processes the request and mails the certificate. This option is helpful if you are traveling or prefer to manage the request online.
Note: Fees are not refunded after a search is conducted, even if no record is found. Call (573) 729-3106 first to confirm whether the record is held at the county level before submitting a paid request.
Who Can Get Dent County Birth Records
Missouri birth records are restricted documents. Access is governed by RSMo 193.245. Only people with a direct interest in the record may receive a certified copy.
Eligible requestors include:
- The person named on the certificate (age 18 or older)
- A parent listed on the record
- A legal guardian with documentation of guardianship
- A spouse or adult child of the named person
- An attorney representing an eligible party
- A government agency acting in an official capacity
People who do not meet these criteria can access historical records through the Missouri State Archives and genealogy databases like FamilySearch, though these are not certified copies and are not valid for legal identification purposes.
Dent County Birth Certificate Fees
A certified birth certificate costs $15 per copy. If you order additional copies in the same transaction, each additional copy is $11. This fee structure applies at both the county health center and the state Bureau of Vital Records and is set under RSMo 193.265. Fees are not waived and are not refunded once a search has been conducted.
The county health center accepts cash and checks. The state office requires a check or money order payable to Missouri State Treasurer. VitalChek takes major credit cards but adds a processing fee that is paid to VitalChek, not the state.
Missouri Bureau of Vital Records: State-Level Dent County Records
The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records holds all state birth records from January 1910 to the present, including all registered Dent County births. If you need a record from 1910 to 1919, the state office is your only option since local health centers only hold records from 1920 forward.
The Missouri DHSS vital records division handles mail and online requests only. The state office does not accept walk-in requests from the public. Use the Dent County Health Center in Salem for in-person service.

Historical Dent County Birth Records
Dent County was established in 1851. Births before 1910 were not registered with the state. Some early records do exist. The County Clerk holds birth and death records from approximately 1883 to 1890. These are not certified vital records but may contain useful details for family history research.
The Missouri State Archives is the best resource for pre-state records. The Archives holds microfilmed and digitized county records from across Missouri and offers free online searching. The Missouri Digital Heritage website also provides access to historical document collections. FamilySearch has indexed many Missouri county records and is another strong research tool.
For births before 1883, look to church records, early federal census entries, and family Bibles. These sources can confirm approximate birth dates and places when official records don't exist. The CDC vital statistics page for Missouri gives an overview of what records exist and where to find them.
Adoptee Access to Dent County Birth Records
Missouri adoptees who are 18 or older have the right to request their original birth certificate under RSMo 193.128. The original record, which may show birth parents by name, can be requested from the Bureau of Vital Records without a court order. The copy provided is uncertified, meaning it cannot be used as legal identification, but it is a valuable document for personal and medical history research.
To request an original birth certificate as an adoptee, contact the Bureau of Vital Records at (573) 751-6387 and provide your name, date of birth, and a valid photo ID. Birth parents who are open to contact can register with the Missouri Adoption Registry to signal their willingness to connect with their birth child.
Delayed and Amended Dent County Birth Certificates
If a Dent County birth was never registered, a delayed birth certificate can be created under RSMo 193.105. The process goes through the Bureau of Vital Records and requires supporting documentation. Acceptable evidence includes census records, school records, baptismal records, affidavits from witnesses, and early medical records. Submit as much evidence as you can. The state creates a birth record if the documentation is sufficient to confirm the birth.
Amendments to correct errors on existing Dent County birth certificates are also processed through the Bureau of Vital Records. Name spelling errors, incorrect birth dates, and parental information changes all require documentation. Call (573) 751-6387 to learn the specific documents needed for your type of correction.
