How to Request Macon County Birth Records

Three methods exist to get a certified Macon County birth certificate: walk in at the health department, send a mail request, or order online through VitalChek.

For in-person requests, go to 503 North Missouri in Macon. Bring a valid photo ID and know the full name on the certificate, the date of birth, and the hospital or city of birth. Pay $15 at the counter. Staff will print the certified copy while you wait in most cases.

Mail requests take longer. Download the Missouri vital records application from the DHSS vital records request page. Fill out the form but do not sign it until you are in front of a notary. Get it notarized, attach a copy of your photo ID, and include a check or money order for $15 payable to Macon County Health Department. Mail the complete packet to 503 North Missouri, Macon, MO 63552. Allow one to two weeks after the office receives your packet.

Online orders go through VitalChek. This service adds a fee on top of the $15 state certificate fee. Orders are routed to the Bureau of Vital Records and delivered by mail. VitalChek handles records from 1910 forward; it cannot help with pre-registration births.

Who Can Get a Macon County Birth Certificate

Missouri restricts access to certified birth records. Under RSMo 193.245, a certified copy can be issued to the registrant (age 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian on the certificate, immediate family in the direct line of descent (not cousins), a spouse, or a legal representative with documented authority.

Each request requires a valid government-issued photo ID. If you are not the registrant, you may also need proof of your relationship, such as a marriage certificate, a birth certificate showing parentage, or a court order. Failure to provide proper ID will result in the request being denied.

Researchers without a qualifying family connection may still access older Macon County birth records. Missouri generally makes birth records public after 100 years. Early county records from the 1880s and 1890s are often available through the Macon County Clerk or the Missouri State Archives with fewer restrictions. Note: Unofficial genealogy database results are not certified and cannot be used for legal identity purposes.

Macon County Birth Certificate Fees

The fee for a certified Macon County birth certificate is $15 per copy. If you need more than one copy, each additional copy ordered at the same time costs $11. These fees are set by state law under RSMo 193.265 and apply at both the county and state levels.

Payment methods at the county office include cash, check, and money order. Credit and debit cards may also be accepted, so call ahead to confirm. Mail requests must include a check or money order. Online orders through VitalChek require a credit card, and VitalChek adds a service fee, making in-person or mail orders cheaper for most people.

All fees are non-refundable. You pay whether or not a record is found. Before you submit, double-check the spelling of the name and the birth date to avoid submitting a request for a record that does not match what is on file.
