How to Request Knox County Birth Records

In person is the fastest option. Visit the Edina office at 107 N. 4th St., show photo ID, and pay $15. Most in-person requests are processed the same day.

By mail, send a written request that includes the full name, date and place of birth, and parents' names. Attach a copy of your photo ID and a check or money order for $15 payable to the Knox County Health Department. Do not mail cash. Allow two to three weeks for mail requests.

Online orders go through VitalChek, which is the state-approved service for Missouri vital records. VitalChek accepts debit and credit cards and delivers records by mail. A convenience fee is added to the $15 base cost.

For pre-1920 births, use the state bureau at 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, phone (573) 751-6387. See the DHSS obtain vital records page for step-by-step guidance.

Who Can Access Knox County Birth Records

Missouri restricts certified birth records to people with a direct and tangible interest. RSMo 193.245 lists the eligible groups:

  • The person named on the record (18 or older)
  • A parent listed on the birth certificate
  • A legal guardian who can show court documentation
  • A spouse, child, or sibling of the named person
  • An attorney or legal representative with proper authorization
  • A court-authorized individual

Others may request an informational copy. This shows the same birth data but is stamped "not valid for legal purposes." It cannot serve as legal proof of birth for passports or government programs.

Note: Bring photo ID. Two alternate documents with your name are acceptable if you have no photo ID.

Knox County Birth Certificate Fees

Certified birth copies cost $15 each. Death certificates are $14 for the first copy and $11 for each additional copy in the same order. Missouri's fee schedule is defined in RSMo 193.265. These rates apply at both the county office and the state bureau.

For records prior to what the county office has, contact the state. The state level holds births from January 1910 forward, including long-form versions not available locally. The Knox County office accepts standard payment methods. Call ahead to confirm. VitalChek adds a service fee for online orders. Fees are non-refundable after a search begins.
