Who Can Get Johnson County Birth Records

Missouri limits access to certified birth certificates to those with a direct interest under RSMo 193.245. Eligible requesters include:

  • The person on the certificate (must be 18 or older)
  • A parent listed on the birth record
  • A legal guardian with court paperwork
  • A spouse, child, or sibling of the person named
  • An attorney acting for an eligible family member
  • A court-authorized representative

Others can get a non-certified informational copy. This shows all the birth data but is stamped "not valid for legal purposes." You cannot use it for passports or official government applications.

Acceptable ID includes a driver's license, passport, or school, work, or military ID. If you have no photo ID, bring two alternate documents with your name.

Johnson County Birth Certificate Fees

Certified birth copies cost $15 each. Each additional copy ordered in the same transaction is $11. These fees apply at both the county office and the state bureau. The legal authority for these rates is RSMo 193.265.

Johnson County Community Health accepts cash, check, credit and debit cards, and money orders. VitalChek adds its own processing fee for online orders. Fees are not returned once a search is started, even if no record is found.

State and Historical Johnson County Birth Records

The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records holds all registered Missouri births from January 1910 forward. For births between 1910 and 1919, the state is the only modern source. Contact the bureau at 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, or call (573) 751-6387. See the DHSS vital records page for full request details.

The state bureau can issue both short-form and long-form certified copies. The local Johnson County office provides short form only. If you need a long-form copy with more detail, request it from the state.

For historical research, the Missouri State Archives holds older county clerk birth registrations from the 1880s and later. Some records are available online through Missouri Digital Heritage at no cost. FamilySearch also indexes older Missouri vital records at no charge. The CDC Missouri guide confirms the Bureau of Vital Records as the correct state contact.

For births that were never registered at the time, delayed registration is governed by RSMo 193.105. You must file with the state bureau and provide supporting documents.

Adoptee Access to Johnson County Birth Records

Adult adoptees can request their original birth certificate from the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records under RSMo 193.128. You must be 18 or older. The request goes to the state office, not Johnson County Community Health. Provide proof of identity and adoptee status. Any contact preference form filed by the birth parent will be included with the released record.
