How to Get a Jefferson County Birth Certificate

In person is the fastest option. Visit the health department at 1818 Lonedell Rd. in Arnold with valid photo ID and $15. Your certificate is printed same-day. Call (636) 282-1010 to confirm hours before your trip.

By mail, send a written request with the full name, date and place of birth, and parents' names. Include a photocopy of your photo ID and a check or money order for $15 payable to the Jefferson County Health Department. Do not send cash. Mail requests typically take one to two weeks.

Online orders go through VitalChek at any time, 24 hours a day. You can also call VitalChek at 1-877-817-7363. VitalChek accepts major debit and credit cards. A convenience fee is charged on top of the $15 base rate. Records are shipped by mail.

For births before 1920, contact the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records at 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, phone (573) 751-6387.

Note: For newborns, allow at least two to three weeks after birth before requesting a certificate. New records need time to enter the statewide system.

Who Can Get Jefferson County Birth Records

Missouri law limits who can receive a certified birth certificate. Under RSMo 193.245, the eligible requesters are:

  • The person named on the certificate (age 18 or older)
  • A parent listed on the birth record
  • A legal guardian with documentation from a court
  • A spouse, child, or sibling of the person named
  • An attorney acting on behalf of an eligible family member
  • Any person authorized by a court order

Those who do not qualify for a certified copy can request an informational copy. That document shows the same data but is stamped "not valid for legal purposes." It cannot be used for passport applications, school enrollment, or government benefit claims.

All requesters must show valid ID. Photo ID is preferred. Two alternate forms of ID with your name are acceptable if you lack photo ID.

Each certified copy costs $15. Extra copies ordered at the same time are $11 each. Death certificates follow a different rate: $14 for the first copy, $11 for each additional copy. Missouri fee authority is established by RSMo 193.265.

Payment options at the Jefferson County Health Department include standard forms like cash and check. VitalChek online orders carry an added service fee. Fees are not refunded once the office begins a search, even if no matching record is found.
