How to Request Maries County Birth Certificates

For walk-in service, go to 200 N. Main, Suite G51 in Rolla. Bring a valid photo ID, know the full name on the certificate, the date of birth, and the city or hospital of birth. Pay $15 at the counter. Staff will print the certified copy on-site.

Mail requests require a notarized application, a copy of your photo ID, and a check or money order for $15. Download the Missouri vital records application from the DHSS vital records page. Online orders go through VitalChek, the state-approved ordering service. VitalChek adds a service fee on top of the $15 certificate fee. Orders are processed by the Bureau of Vital Records and delivered by mail. VitalChek is available around the clock for those who cannot visit or mail during business hours.

Who Can Get a Maries County Birth Certificate

Missouri law limits who can request a certified birth record. Under RSMo 193.245, a certified copy can be issued to the registrant (age 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian on the certificate, immediate family in the direct line of descent (not including cousins), a spouse, or a legal representative with documented authority.

Photo ID is required at all times. If you are making a request on behalf of someone else, bring documentation that shows your relationship. A spouse brings a marriage certificate. A parent brings the child's birth certificate. A legal guardian brings the court order granting guardianship. A lawyer or authorized agent brings a notarized power of attorney or court order.

Genealogists without a qualifying family connection can still access older Maries County birth records. Missouri generally opens birth records to the public after 100 years. Early county clerk records from 1883 to 1887 may be accessed through the Maries County Clerk or State Archives with fewer restrictions. Note: Older records from county ledgers are not certified copies and cannot be used for legal identity purposes.

Maries County Birth Record Fees and Payment

The fee for a certified Maries County birth certificate is $15 per copy. Additional copies ordered at the same time cost $11 each. These fees apply at both the county and state levels and are set by RSMo 193.265.

Payment methods at the Rolla office include cash, check, and money order. Credit and debit cards may be accepted as well, so call ahead to confirm. Mail requests must include a check or money order. Online orders through VitalChek require a credit card, and VitalChek's service fee makes online ordering more expensive than in-person or mail requests.

All fees are non-refundable. You pay whether or not a matching record is found. Confirm the correct name spelling and birth date before submitting any request. No charge applies just for asking about a record; payment is only required when ordering a certified copy.

Historical Maries County Birth Records

Reliable statewide birth registration in Missouri began in January 1910. Before that date, Maries County birth records are limited and depend on what local officials recorded. The Maries County Clerk held birth and death records from 1883 to 1887. These are ledger entries, not formal certificates, but they can show names, dates, and parents for births in that period. Contact the Maries County Clerk at the courthouse in Vienna to ask about specific years.

Marriage records in Maries County are available from July 1948 forward. Divorce records start from the same date. For genealogical research before 1910, the best resources are the Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City and the Missouri Digital Heritage site, which offers free online access to some digitized records including early vital statistics.

The FamilySearch Maries County genealogy page gives a useful overview of record types, timeframes, and repositories, which is a good starting point when researching births before formal state registration.

Adoptee Access to Maries County Birth Records

Under RSMo 193.128, any adult adoptee age 18 or older who was adopted in Missouri can request their original pre-adoption birth certificate from the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City. No consent from birth parents is required. The original certificate shows the name given at birth and the biological parents' names.

To request an original birth certificate as an adoptee, write to the Bureau of Vital Records, 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102. All adoptee original birth certificate requests go to the state Bureau of Vital Records.
