How to Request Hickory County Birth Records
You have three main ways to get a birth certificate in Hickory County. In person is the fastest option. Visit the health department in Hermitage with a valid photo ID and the required fee. Staff can print your certificate the same day in most cases.
By mail is the second option. Send a written request with a copy of your photo ID, a completed application form, and a check or money order for $15 made out to the Hickory County Health Department. Allow two to three weeks for mail processing. Do not send cash.
Online orders go through VitalChek, which is the state-approved third-party service for Missouri vital records. VitalChek accepts debit and credit cards and can ship records to your address. There is an added convenience fee on top of the $15 base cost.
For pre-1920 birth records, contact the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records at 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102, or call (573) 751-6387. The state office has records from January 1910 forward and can issue both short and long form certificates.
Who Can Get Hickory County Birth Records in Missouri
Missouri law restricts access to certified birth certificates. Under RSMo 193.245, only certain people can request a certified copy. These are the eligible requesters:
- The person named on the certificate (if 18 or older)
- A parent listed on the record
- A legal guardian with court documentation
- A spouse, child, or sibling of the person named
- An attorney acting on behalf of the family
- A legal representative with a court order
If you are not in one of these groups, you can still request an informational copy. Informational copies show the same data but are stamped "not valid for legal purposes." They cannot be used for passports, school enrollment, or other official needs.
Note: All requesters must show photo ID. If you have no photo ID, bring two alternate forms with your name on them.
Fees for Hickory County Birth Certificates

Acceptable payment at the Hickory County Health Department includes cash, check, and money order. Credit and debit card acceptance can vary, so call ahead to confirm before your visit. Mail requests must include a check or money order. VitalChek adds a separate service fee for online orders.
Fees are non-refundable once a search has been conducted, even if the record is not found.
State-Level Hickory County Birth Records Resources
The Missouri Bureau of Vital Records is the primary state agency. It holds all registered Missouri births from January 1910 onward. The bureau can issue both short-form and long-form certified copies, which is useful if you need additional detail not shown on a county-issued short form.
You can request from the state by mail, in person in Jefferson City, or online through VitalChek. The state office address is 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Phone: (573) 751-6387. The online request guide walks through each step.
The Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City holds older birth records that predate statewide registration, including county clerk records from the 1880s. These are typically used for genealogy research rather than legal purposes. The Missouri Digital Heritage site also has some older vital records scanned online at no cost.
For federal verification of Missouri birth data, the CDC Where to Write guide for Missouri confirms the Bureau of Vital Records as the correct state contact.
Historical and Genealogical Birth Records for Hickory County
Hickory County has birth and death records held by the County Clerk dating from 1883 to 1885. These early records predate state registration and are not the same as modern certified certificates. They are best used for family history research. The Missouri State Archives has digitized some of these older county clerk records and may be able to help locate specific entries.
FamilySearch also indexes Hickory County genealogical records for free. Their database includes older Missouri birth registrations that were collected at the county level before the state took over in 1910. If you are tracing family roots, FamilySearch is worth checking before contacting the county or state office.
Delayed birth certificates can also be filed for people whose birth was not registered at the time. The process is governed by RSMo 193.105. You would need to gather supporting documents and submit them to the Bureau of Vital Records for review.
Adoptee Access to Birth Records in Hickory County
Missouri law gives adult adoptees the right to access their original birth certificate. Under RSMo 193.128, adoptees who are 18 or older can request a copy of their original birth record from the state. This is a separate process from requesting a standard certified copy.
The request goes directly to the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records, not the Hickory County Health Department. You will need to submit proof of your identity and your adoption status. The bureau reviews each request individually. If a birth parent has filed a contact preference form, that information will be included with the record.
